These pictures show the effect of nutrient enrichment on the pond. Nutrient enrichment has resulted in excessive plant growth in the lake. As the plants die, sedimentation increases, making the pond more shallow. Nutrient enrichment, other sources of sedimentation such as runoff from the roads, and poor circulation are accelerating the aging process of the pond. Without intervention, Ames Pond will continue to degrade and will eventually become a swamp.
